Landscape Artist Ben Whitehouse Showcases Observation at the Arkansas Arts Center

(LITTLE ROCK, AR)—Chicago-based, British landscape artist Ben Whitehouse will showcase his exhibition Ben Whitehouse: Observation June 5 - August 2, 2009 at the Arkansas Arts Center in the Jeannette Edris Rockefeller Gallery.

Ben Whitehouse: Observation addresses the problem of dealing with a changing environment. "This exhibition is my effort to connect people through art to an evolving environment," said Whitehouse.

The exhibition features six paintings from Whitehouse's travels to the Highlands of Scotland, Lake Michigan and Central Park in New York. The exhibition also highlights three works from Whitehouse's Revolution series - a series of 24 hour high definition digital videos shown in real time, equivalent to one revolution of the planet.

"Although I began my career as a landscape painter, I became troubled by painting's inability to account for constant change in landscape experience," said Whitehouse. "When I began the Revolution series, I realized that making 24-hour digital videos was a way forward. Each video shows every moment that occurred in the landscape with not one second missing."

Ben Whitehouse: Observation spans most of Whitehouse's professional career and demonstrates how his work has evolved from one medium to another. He began his career in the '80s as a landscape painter. His work changed from large-scale paintings, to experimental-format paintings, to high definition, 24-hour digital video.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Whitehouse will discuss his work as a landscape artist in a fascinating lecture titled Ben Whitehouse's Observations. The lecture will be held in the Arkansas Arts Center Lecture Hall on Thursday, June 4, at 6 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
